Bring out the School Dinners!

I wanted to blog about an interesting piece we found in the Guardian.

Denis Campbell explains the importance of a good school dinner as being key to supporting good classroom behaviour and attainment. The importance of healthy eating has been broadly explored in the documentaries starring Jamie Oliver which started in 2005. Jamie is a very well respected chef, who has appealed to the masses and really helped highlight this issue. He replaced burgers and other processed foods with healthier alternatives and even encouraged the government to place a larger emphasis on the relationship between nutritious foods and pupils health and wellbeing.

The new coalition government has decided to scrap the past “help” it offered to less fortunate families and has decided to channel that money into making healthy school meals more affordable for everyone. They are also going to look at how to encourage students to bother queuing at the canteen rather than opt for fast food options nearby. By bringing the price of school meals down generally, students may not see such a benefit as to going to the local fast food place with their £ menu!
